And my back counter and shelf space underneath is used for storage. For two years, the clutter had been bothering me. Plus, it's too tempting for wandering little eyes:
So I decided to install some curtains. I sewed the fabric myself! (Aren't you proud of me?) I think it turned out much better:
And now, I can enjoy my last month of summer vacation completely STRESS FREE!!

As soon as I read that you were having distraction problems with your shelves, I thought you should make curtains! But you're a step ahead of me. Super cute room!!

I love your curtains! I was thinking of doing the exact same thing on my shelves. Yes, the stuff is distracting and also sometimes I like kids to have access to games that are on a particular shelf so if I had curtains I could keep the other shelves covered. How did you make them? I have ZERO sewing skills...

LOVE EVERY PART of your classroom. It looks so great and so neat and organized. I especially love the curtains. Automatically, it helps keep clutter hidden, and it definately is less distracting. I hope the curious hands will keep to themselves....

Very lovely and I know the kids are going to love it. I will, of course, be looking forward to a photo a few months down the road. Curtains were a perfect solution. Gonna have to tell my sister. Enjoy the rest of the summer.
Looks great. I love the elementary classroom. My classroom often looks like elementary school because it's all bright and colorful, but with 200+ kids, I can't put names on frogs or the wall would just be one big frog pond. Plus some Frenchie would see it and get the wrong idea...
I know why you made the curtains to cover the stuff in the cabinets, but it reminds me of my first year teaching when there were curtains on every space like that and I really didn't like it!!
Also, I do a major calendar focus to start each class in 6th and 7th grade too! We talk about the day, date, weather, season and if anything holiday wise is going on that month. I tell them it's like calendar time when they were little and that it's the repetition that's going to help them so much!! I think I need to incorporate a couple more pieces with the calendar but I can't never figure out what!

As a sign of how much hearing impaired classrooms have changed over the years (though, not THAT many years ago), my own pre-k classroom had a CAGE in it for out-of-control kids. Not.even.kidding.
