Summer reading

Besides crafting, I have a list of books I'd like to read this summer.

I recently finished Same Kind of Different as Me by Ron Hall and Denver Moore (LOVED it!), and next up:

The Help by Kathryn Stockett
Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot
The Many Lives and Secret Sorrows of Josephine B. by Sandra Gulland
Bossypants by Tina Fey

Anything I should add to the list? What are you reading this summer?

OMG The Help is my favorite book EVER tied with Where the Red Fern Grows. They are nothing alike, I just love them both.

If you like fast, silly, easy reads, try the Janet Evanovich series that starts with One for the Money and goes up to 17 this summer. They are soooooo entertaining and you can read them in like two days. Just pure foolishness but I really like the pleasure of reading them, especially in summer!

In the past year I have read The Help, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks and Bossypants and enjoyed them all greatly. I just finished Operation Mincemeat which was a fabulous non-fiction book. Cutting for Stone has been on my to-read list for months now - maybe I'll manage it this summer. I'm not familiar with the other two, but I'm putting them on hold at the library right now!

LOVED the help! Bossypants is on my list too. :) I heard that the audio version is HILARIOUS because it's narrated by Tina Fey, so I've got the CDs on hold at the library! Can't wait. :)

I've just downloaded a bunch of things to read on my Kindle - but I'm sure most of them are available in paperback or real book - lol. Let's see - I'm currently reading Live Free or Die (The Granite State Mysteries). Recently I've uploaded Kissing Kelli (A Texas Legacy Romance) by Kathy Carmichael (I've used her site for writing related info and then she had a book published - Confessions of a something Queen - the title is eluding me right now but it was funny as all get out), To Tell the Truth by Faye Tollison (she is a personal friend of mine and I had a hand in doing some early editing for her book), Requiem for the Ripper and Legacy of the Ripper, both by Brian Porter (read the first one (A Study in Red the Secret Diary of Jack the Ripper) when it first came out and enjoyed although I'm not a big follower of the Jack the Ripper stories - so figured I needed to get the other two as well; the first one is being made into a movie and should be out this year sometime, at least in England but not in the United States yet); Ghost for Rent by Penny Lockwood, Death of a Cozy Writer, Celebrities for Breakfast by Shelley Stout author of Radium Halos (awesome book about the dial factor workers and their lives after the radium dye events (all fictional but based on true events)- told from a slightly mentally retarded woman's point of view (one of the ladies who worked in the factory in Illinois or up north - lol - I highly recommend this for those who like fictional accounts on true events); Murder Half Baked by Kathleen Delaney (a personal friend of mine as well - figured I'd start her books while I had a chance (you know money and a new Kindle - lol), Dead to Writes, Sounds of Murder (A Pamela Barnes Acoustic mystery), Heat Wave (the Castle TV series based books), FM for Murder (A Pamela Barnes Acoustic mystery - I think this is the first in the series), June Bug (a murder-by-the-month mystery, #2 - but after starting to read it figured out I had already read the book as it was the one I won a couple of years ago), Shadow Boy (Tales of Ever #3 - this is an ebook only - but part of a series of a friend of mine and they are really quick reads - I've read the other two in the series also - Banished (#1) and Fire Girl (#2) - they only come out once a month and there are three more to come - so I have to wait a bit to get the rest - lol - they are by Echelon Press's Quake Me Up side and are called Electric Shorts - they are geared towards kids and are to help them enjoy reading without feeling stressed to read for long periods of time), Dilbert Dallas and the Electric Guitar series (have read the first two - these have a historical slant to them and are written in collaboration with the author's son, another friend of mine - lol), Still Life with Murder (A Nell Sweeny mystery) (just finished this one not too long ago and would like to get more in the series in the future), Twin Shorts (kind of a silly collection of short stories - written from a student's perspective (writing papers for class) about her twin brothers - was a quick read and fun but silly), Henry Burp Mind your Manners (again a quick read, a little lesson in there - not too bad for a short story or a children's book), The Strange Case of Finley Jayne and Mortal Ghost. These all have been downloaded since the first of June. Some I read immediately, some I file away to read later like on my trips coming up.

Just finished Elizabeth Craig Spann's first in the Memphis BBQ Mystery series (the title eludes me right now and she is writing under a different name for that series and the second was just released last week). I met her at a local chapter of Sisters in Crime meeting where she was the guest speaker.

(rest of posting) -

As you can see from my collection - mostly mysteries/thrillers/suspense with a few children's and YA thrown in there. I'm finding that reading on my Kindle I do tend to read more books but of late just haven't had the energy to read when I go to bed and therefore have slowed down in reading. Hope you get to read everything on your list and that you find lots of new reads along the way - E :)

hello! Comments anyone?

This list looks great. Please post when you finish each one and tell us what you thought.

I recently finished The Story of Beautiful Girl and loved it.

And I know you likely don't want to read any children's books as you are on break from them, but I love anything by Elizabeth Enright.

Happy reading!

Oh I have The Help on my bookshelf right now. I need to read it. I'm also interested in Bossypants. You will have to let us know how you like these books!

I added The Help to my wish list for kindle but I refuse to pay $10 for an ebook so hopefully it will go on sale once the movie is released. I have a ton of stuff downloaded since my last posting that I need to read now. Just downloaded our local chapter of Sisters in Crime president's book called Dear Killer and the fourth in Jen Wylie's electric short Tales of Ever series - so can't wait to finish one book and start some others. I have a reading list that will last me about a few weeks now - lol - E :)
